Laurence has over 50 years of experience as a California Certified Public Accountant. Presently, he works as a trustee for three trusts and as an advisor to the Board of Directors of Crouse & Associates. Prior to retirement, Laurence worked with clients in a diverse range of industries, including real estate, independent elevator companies in the Bay Area, title insurance companies, florist and event planners, a wholesaler of garden equipment and supplies, other independent companies, and several income tax clients.
Laurence earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of California, Los Angeles, before working as a senior accountant with Price Waterhouse and Company (now Price Waterhouse Coopers). He eventually formed Smith and Lange, CPAs, with Herb Smith. Several years later, Gary Phillips joined the firm to become Smith, Lange & Phillips. Laurence went on to pursue a master’s degree in taxation from Golden Gate University where he received the Outstanding Graduate Award. Smith, Lange, & Phillips merged with Daoro Zydel & Holland in 2009 to form DZH Phillips. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the California Society of Public Accountants (CalCPA), the American Contract Bridge League, Sons in Retirement (SIR), and the Olympic Club. Laurence also gained invaluable leadership experience serving as a Captain in the Army, and he currently serves on the Board of Directors of Unit 499 in Walnut Creek, and on the Board of Branch 8 of SIR.
In his retirement, Laurence keeps busy with his four grandchildren, reading, traveling, and playing golf and bridge. He will likely be taking in the San Francisco Symphony on a given evening or be at an Oakland As game enjoying season tickets.
